This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden High School.
Matt Vick, BHS, Math Teacher
Experience: 15 years with BHSC, 12 of those at BHS
College/University: Indiana University Southeast
Fun facts: Coach Vick says, "A lot of my students don't know that I taught at Henryville at the beginning of my career. Also, I help on our family farm, and we are known for raising cantaloupes (about 40,000 plants each year)."
Mr. Vick says, "My favorite part of teaching is interacting with the students. Whether it's talking sports, their current job, or even if it's about math, it's fun talking with my students. I know math can be boring for a lot of kids, so I try to make it as fun and down to earth as possible."
Mr. Vick was nominated by a colleague whose own 3 children have all had Mr. Vick as a high school teacher. The Saylor Family wrote, "Mr. Vick has taught all three of our children over the course of several years at Borden. He has always been someone our children feel comfortable confiding in and leaning on. Mr. Vick has always been approachable. My children have asked Mr. Vick math questions when they are no longer in his class. One of my daughters was his cadet teacher and Mr. Vick helped grow her love and teaching and math during her time with him. We cannot express how thankful we are for a teacher like Matt Vick at Borden High School. "
Mr. Vick is sometimes better known as Coach Vick - in addition to teaching math at Borden High School, he serves as head coach for the BHS girls' basketball team and led them to back-to-back 1A State Championship wins. Mr. Vick also often drives a bus for BHSC to help out.
Thank you for everything you do to support the students of BHSC, Mr. Vick!

🎨 Thinking BIG in Intro to 3D Art! 🎨
Mrs. Morgan Cope’s Intro to 3D Art students are turning everyday objects into larger-than-life statements, inspired by Swedish-born Pop artist Claes Oldenburg—best known for monumentalizing ordinary items, including his iconic 45-foot Clothespin sculpture near Philadelphia City Hall.
Using paper mâché, students embraced Oldenburg’s bold style by scaling up the familiar in imaginative ways. From a towering queen chess piece to an oversized WD-40 can and a Stanley cup, these sculptures prove that creativity grows when students are encouraged to see the ordinary in new ways.
We’re loving the craftsmanship, collaboration, and creative confidence on display!

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden High School
Cara Martin, BES, Special education teacher
Experience: 30 years in special education, 27 of those years on the Borden campus
College/University: IUS
Fun fact: I own a large Sulcata Tortoise named Sully.
Mrs. Martin says, "My favorite part of teaching is building strong relationships with students and watching their confidence grow. I love seeing students realize they are capable of more than they believed—academically and personally—especially after they’ve struggled or doubted themselves. While not all of our “wins” are obvious, we celebrate each one. Supporting students through challenges and celebrating their successes, even years later when I hear how they’re doing as adults, is what makes this work so meaningful to me."
The McCormick Family nominated Mrs. Martin and shared, "Mrs. Martin is an outstanding educator who treats each child as her own. She understands the individual needs of each student and goes out of her way to accommodate those needs. When people ask me about Borden and why I love this school, Mrs. Martin is one of the first thoughts that comes to mind. You can tell that she teaches with her heart every day she comes to work. I know many students who have overcome great adversity because Mrs. Martin was by their side, each step of the way! She is amazing!! "
Mrs. Martin, thank you for choosing to teach ALL learners and celebrate their wins!

Thank you to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Committee of Jeffersonville, Indiana for their generous support of a BHSC senior and for continuing to invest in students and the legacy of Dr. King.

The Indiana Institute on Disability & Community's Center on Community Living and Careers is offering a FREE, virtual or in-person information session on Monday, December 15th from 9 AM to 12 PM ET, and BHSC wants to help remove any potential barriers for our families who would like to hear the information but are unable to coordinate virtual attendance.
A Place of My Own offers important information for any individual with a disability, their families, or caregivers. When people can no longer provide support, adults face sudden changes such as new homes, routines, and caregivers. We welcome you to join us in learning more about residential options, funding, regulations, workforce challenges, and intentional communities. Jim McCarten will facilitate this session. Jim is a special needs attorney and focuses on planning to protect benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. He advises families and trustees of Special Needs Trusts and is a sought-after speaker for professionals and families alike.
If you'd like to attend virtually but need help setting up on the technology side, BHSC is happy to host you at our central office! BHSC has registered to attend, and we will log in so that anyone in our board room can easily hang out in a common space without having to register separately. You won't even need to bring a device and can watch from ours.
If you plan to attend here at BHSC, shoot Samantha Hurst an email at shurst@bhsc.school or call 812-913-9630 to RSVP by Dec. 12th. If you'd like to sign up to attend virtually from your own space or even in-person, use this link: A Place of My Own - Information Session

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden High School!
Brittany Allen, BHS, Special Education Teacher
Experience: 2 yrs at BHS, 15 yrs overall
College/University: Morehead State & Purdue Global
Fun fact: I have a Boston Terrier that makes Chewbacca noises at strangers rather than barking, and I absolutely love her for it!
Mrs. Allen LOVES getting to help students recognize their full abilities. "We celebrate victories, no matter the size. You improved from a kindergarten reading level to a seventh grade reading level? Way to go, you awesome reader! You learned to write your first name? Way to build your brain and skills!"
Mrs. Allen was actually nominated by the families of two different students, and we wanted to share their words with her and with the BHSC community!
The family of JP wrote, "Mrs. Allen does an outstanding job supporting, nurturing, and advocating for her special needs classroom. The most important thing she does is to make sure her students are not seen as different, incapable, or incompetent. She goes out of her way to integrate students with the rest of the school in a safe, positive way, bringing awareness to a population that very well could be secreted away in a classroom. As a mother of a child with special needs, I am aware that community is so important to the life of my child. It is important that he has people who recognize him, and are comfortable around him to reach out and help him if he should be alone or in a precarious situation. This is a top concern of mine, and Mrs. Allen is doing the hard work of balancing independence and support. "
Addison's family said, "Mrs. Allen is an amazing teacher. Addie is not only learning life skills such as cooking, laundry, waiting on customers at the coffee cart, and taking money. Academically, Addie makes great progress every year. Last year Addie went from a 3rd grade reading level to a 7th grade reading level."
Mrs. Allen, your impact is huge, and your work does not go unnoticed. We are better because you choose to be part of BHSC!

Twenty-two NHS seniors traveled to Scottsville Community Church to pick up a very generous food donation—180 bags of food to support local families. Additional senior volunteers joined in to unload and sort the items for distribution, and Superintendent Dr. Comer jumped in to help as well!
Because of this effort, 60 local families will benefit from this donation. We are proud of our students for giving their time, hearts, and energy to support our community. 🫶

Borden High School English 206 seniors with Mrs. Craft dove into Act I of Macbeth with a Gallery Walk activity—and they crushed it! 🙌
It was their first time trying this strategy to share observations and insights, and they were so engaged they asked if we could do it again. Love seeing students excited about Shakespeare! 🎭📚

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden Elementary School!
Amy Greenwell, BES, Kindergarten Teacher
Experience: 25th year at BHSC, 26 years overall
College/University: IU Southeast
Fun fact: Mrs. Greenwell loves to go to the ocean, but she's afraid of the fish in the water. She does not want them to touch her!
When we asked Mrs. Greenwell about her favorite part of teaching kindergarten, Mrs. Greenwell said, "My favorite part is seeing the smiling faces every day and connecting with each of my students. I love to hear about all of their lives and work with them to be the best they can be. When we are connected, we trust each other and feel safe and that is when we blossom."
Mrs. Greenwell was nominated by Declan's family, who wrote, "Our family moved from Louisville at the end of Declan’s kindergarten year, and our kids started at Borden Elementary right after Spring Break. With only 2 months left of school Mrs. Greenwell informed us that Declan was very far behind where he should be (he only knew about 10 out of 50 sight words) and we had no idea. There was no communication at all from his JCPS teacher. With Mrs. Greenwell’s help we came up with a plan - she would work with him at school, and we would work with him at home, and by the end of the year, just 2 short months he learned over THIRTY sight words. This woman accomplished in 2 months what JCPS didn’t in 7! On the last day of school she even sent home a list of words that he should know by 1st grade. That way we could work with him all summer. "
"What struck me the most is how much she truly cared. If it wasn’t for Mrs. Greenwell, Declan would have continued to struggle and be behind for years. I will never forget what she did for him (whether she realized it or not). It truly solidified that we made the right decision in moving from Kentucky to Indiana. We love Borden and Mrs. Greenwell is a huge reason why. She deserves to be recognized because I’m sure that Declan isn’t the only student she’s gone above and beyond for."
Congratulations, Mrs. Greenwell! Declan's family and all of BHSC celebrates you!
