Winners receive a $50 Amazon gift card courtesy of the Kolton Kaiser Foundation. The nominator’s identity is revealed to the honoree on announcement day to keep the fun and suspense. This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden High School. Morgan Cope, BHS, Art Experience: 20 years at BHS! College/University: DePauw University Fun fact: I originally wasn't planning on being a teacher. I wanted to work in an art gallery and interned in NYC in college. For Mrs. Cope, identifying her favorite part of her job is easy. "I really enjoy connecting with students, teaching them about art, and seeing them do things they didn't think they could achieve. I’m incredibly proud of the artwork my students produce, but I’m just as proud of the relationships we build." The family who nominated Mrs. Cope asked to remain anonymous but shared that "Mrs. Cope helps us in her classes with what she teaches, but she also works really hard to connect with other students who are not in art classes during study hall so that she can help them. She will work with us on any of our classes, even when they aren't classes she teaches." Mrs. Cope is also a class sponsor, sells tickets at basketball games, and calls the office to make sure someone checks in on kids who are having a rough day. Mrs. Cope, thank you for being real, being kind, and making sure everyone feels like they belong! 🎨 Thinking BIG in Intro to 3D Art! 🎨

Mrs. Morgan Cope’s Intro to 3D Art students are turning everyday objects into larger-than-life statements, inspired by Swedish-born Pop artist Claes Oldenburg—best known for monumentalizing ordinary items, including his iconic 45-foot Clothespin sculpture near Philadelphia City Hall.

Using paper mâché, students embraced Oldenburg’s bold style by scaling up the familiar in imaginative ways. From a towering queen chess piece to an oversized WD-40 can and a Stanley cup, these sculptures prove that creativity grows when students are encouraged to see the ordinary in new ways.

We’re loving the craftsmanship, collaboration, and creative confidence on display!

As part of National School Counseling Week, we’re celebrating the dedicated counselors who support our students academically, socially, and emotionally. Borden High School Principal Mr. Charles Gardner praised Mrs. Cavins and her work at BHS: "A huge shoutout to Borden Jr./Sr. High School counselor, Amanda Cavins, for her incredible dedication to our students.  Mrs. Cavins plays a vital role in helping BHS students achieve school success by guiding them through their academic planning and decision-making. Whether she’s helping students navigate diploma types and requirements, discovering scholarship opportunities, or coordinating college credit, she ensures every student is on a path toward their future goals. Mrs. Cavins maintains great relationships with many outside partners including Ivy Tech, IUS, and the Prosser Career Center. These partnerships provide our students with direct access to specialized vocational training and dual-credit courses. Outside of school hours, Mrs. Cavins is a constant at athletic events, supporting students and helping every event run smoothly.  We are so grateful for all she does to put students first. Thank you, Mrs. Cavins, for everything you do to prepare our students for life after high school!" Mrs. Cavins, thank you for choosing to support BHSC students!

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden High School

Cara Martin, BES, Special education teacher

Experience: 30 years in special education, 27 of those years on the Borden campus
College/University: IUS
Fun fact: I own a large Sulcata Tortoise named Sully.

Mrs. Martin says, "My favorite part of teaching is building strong relationships with students and watching their confidence grow. I love seeing students realize they are capable of more than they believed—academically and personally—especially after they’ve struggled or doubted themselves. While not all of our “wins” are obvious, we celebrate each one. Supporting students through challenges and celebrating their successes, even years later when I hear how they’re doing as adults, is what makes this work so meaningful to me."

The McCormick Family nominated Mrs. Martin and shared, "Mrs. Martin is an outstanding educator who treats each child as her own. She understands the individual needs of each student and goes out of her way to accommodate those needs. When people ask me about Borden and why I love this school, Mrs. Martin is one of the first thoughts that comes to mind. You can tell that she teaches with her heart every day she comes to work. I know many students who have overcome great adversity because Mrs. Martin was by their side, each step of the way! She is amazing!! "

Mrs. Martin, thank you for choosing to teach ALL learners and celebrate their wins!

BHSC is proud to celebrate BHS senior Ryan Leftwich, who was recognized at Saturday’s MLK Jr. Scholarship Breakfast. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, which reflects both academic commitment and service to others. Ryan plans to pursue a degree in engineering and will make a decision on where he will study in the months to come. Ryan is the son of Beth and Dan Leftwich of Borden.

Thank you to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Committee of Jeffersonville, Indiana for their generous support of a BHSC senior and for continuing to invest in students and the legacy of Dr. King.

The Indiana Institute on Disability & Community's Center on Community Living and Careers is offering a FREE, virtual or in-person information session on Monday, December 15th from 9 AM to 12 PM ET, and BHSC wants to help remove any potential barriers for our families who would like to hear the information but are unable to coordinate virtual attendance.

A Place of My Own offers important information for any individual with a disability, their families, or caregivers. When people can no longer provide support, adults face sudden changes such as new homes, routines, and caregivers. We welcome you to join us in learning more about residential options, funding, regulations, workforce challenges, and intentional communities. Jim McCarten will facilitate this session. Jim is a special needs attorney and focuses on planning to protect benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. He advises families and trustees of Special Needs Trusts and is a sought-after speaker for professionals and families alike.

If you'd like to attend virtually but need help setting up on the technology side, BHSC is happy to host you at our central office! BHSC has registered to attend, and we will log in so that anyone in our board room can easily hang out in a common space without having to register separately. You won't even need to bring a device and can watch from ours.

If you plan to attend here at BHSC, shoot Samantha Hurst an email at shurst@bhsc.school or call 812-913-9630 to RSVP by Dec. 12th. If you'd like to sign up to attend virtually from your own space or even in-person, use this link: A Place of My Own - Information Session

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden High School!

Brittany Allen, BHS, Special Education Teacher

Experience: 2 yrs at BHS, 15 yrs overall
College/University: Morehead State & Purdue Global
Fun fact: I have a Boston Terrier that makes Chewbacca noises at strangers rather than barking, and I absolutely love her for it!

Mrs. Allen LOVES getting to help students recognize their full abilities. "We celebrate victories, no matter the size. You improved from a kindergarten reading level to a seventh grade reading level? Way to go, you awesome reader! You learned to write your first name? Way to build your brain and skills!"

Mrs. Allen was actually nominated by the families of two different students, and we wanted to share their words with her and with the BHSC community!

The family of JP wrote, "Mrs. Allen does an outstanding job supporting, nurturing, and advocating for her special needs classroom. The most important thing she does is to make sure her students are not seen as different, incapable, or incompetent. She goes out of her way to integrate students with the rest of the school in a safe, positive way, bringing awareness to a population that very well could be secreted away in a classroom. As a mother of a child with special needs, I am aware that community is so important to the life of my child. It is important that he has people who recognize him, and are comfortable around him to reach out and help him if he should be alone or in a precarious situation. This is a top concern of mine, and Mrs. Allen is doing the hard work of balancing independence and support. "

Addison's family said, "Mrs. Allen is an amazing teacher. Addie is not only learning life skills such as cooking, laundry, waiting on customers at the coffee cart, and taking money. Academically, Addie makes great progress every year. Last year Addie went from a 3rd grade reading level to a 7th grade reading level."

Mrs. Allen, your impact is huge, and your work does not go unnoticed. We are better because you choose to be part of BHSC!

This morning, Borden High School National Honor Society seniors demonstrated leadership and service! ❤️🖤

Twenty-two NHS seniors traveled to Scottsville Community Church to pick up a very generous food donation—180 bags of food to support local families. Additional senior volunteers joined in to unload and sort the items for distribution, and Superintendent Dr. Comer jumped in to help as well!

Because of this effort, 60 local families will benefit from this donation. We are proud of our students for giving their time, hearts, and energy to support our community. 🫶

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Borden Elementary School!

Amy Greenwell, BES, Kindergarten Teacher

Experience: 25th year at BHSC, 26 years overall
College/University: IU Southeast
Fun fact: Mrs. Greenwell loves to go to the ocean, but she's afraid of the fish in the water. She does not want them to touch her!

When we asked Mrs. Greenwell about her favorite part of teaching kindergarten, Mrs. Greenwell said, "My favorite part is seeing the smiling faces every day and connecting with each of my students. I love to hear about all of their lives and work with them to be the best they can be. When we are connected, we trust each other and feel safe and that is when we blossom."

Mrs. Greenwell was nominated by Declan's family, who wrote, "Our family moved from Louisville at the end of Declan’s kindergarten year, and our kids started at Borden Elementary right after Spring Break. With only 2 months left of school Mrs. Greenwell informed us that Declan was very far behind where he should be (he only knew about 10 out of 50 sight words) and we had no idea. There was no communication at all from his JCPS teacher. With Mrs. Greenwell’s help we came up with a plan - she would work with him at school, and we would work with him at home, and by the end of the year, just 2 short months he learned over THIRTY sight words. This woman accomplished in 2 months what JCPS didn’t in 7! On the last day of school she even sent home a list of words that he should know by 1st grade. That way we could work with him all summer. "

"What struck me the most is how much she truly cared. If it wasn’t for Mrs. Greenwell, Declan would have continued to struggle and be behind for years. I will never forget what she did for him (whether she realized it or not). It truly solidified that we made the right decision in moving from Kentucky to Indiana. We love Borden and Mrs. Greenwell is a huge reason why. She deserves to be recognized because I’m sure that Declan isn’t the only student she’s gone above and beyond for."

Congratulations, Mrs. Greenwell! Declan's family and all of BHSC celebrates you!

Erik Hart, HHS, Business/Dual Credit Teacher

Experience: 4th year at HHS after a career in business and law
College/University: University of the Pacific, Indiana University Kelley School of Business, McGeorge School of Law
Fun fact: Mr. Hart is a lawyer licensed in Indiana, Kentucky, California, and the District of Columbia. He's worked in the entertainment industry in Hollywood since 1994 and still does projects on the side. Also, Mr. Hart played college football!

"My favorite part of my work happens when my students contact me to tell me they're being asked to do new things at work, or they're taking classes at college and they already know how to do something because they learned it from me. This usually happens after my kids graduate. But it's what keeps me going and lifts me up when I'm having a rough day," Mr. Hart said, when asked about the best part of his job.

Mr. Hart was nominated by Eli's family, who wrote, "Mr. Hart has played a crucial part in our son's life. Not only has he been understanding with our son's learning disabilities, he has met with us on his own time outside of school to share things. He always goes above & beyond to help our son."

Kevin Jones, BHS, Health and Social Studies Teacher

Experience: 4th year at BHSC, 19 years overall
College/University: IU Southeast
Fun fact: Mr. Jones has 3 grandchildren and didn't start teaching until he was 33 years old.

When asked about his favorite part of his work, Mr. Jones replied, "My favorite part of teaching here is being able to watch students grow academically, socially, and emotionally from the 7th grade until they walk out the door as seniors. I also love the relationships that are built with the students here in the Borden community."

Mr. Jones was nominated by Madison's family, who wrote, "Mr. Jones made [history] exciting and interesting. He watched out for the students that needed a little extra attention and coached them even in the classroom on topics so they would stick with their education. He’s personal with the students and finds interest of theirs to carry conversations and to make students feel like they have an adult who truly cares in their lives. So many kids need that these days."

Mr. Jones also happens to be the sophomore class sponsor and boys' varsity basketball head coach, so his impact reaches far beyond his classroom walls, as well.

Fun fact: Mrs. Campbell is the mother of four awesome kiddos who are all students at Henryville

"I aim to create a classroom that feels warm, safe, structured, and welcoming—where students are encouraged to do their best and know that they’re capable of growth. I want each child to build confidence, feel a sense of belonging, and see the value they bring to our classroom and community. Above all, I believe every student should leave our school with strong reading skills because being able to read well opens the door to lifelong learning and success. I am so proud of the teachers I work with each day. We share our struggles and work to provide solutions to help our students."

Mrs. Campbell was nominated by Grady's family, who wrote, "My son’s confidence in reading has changed so much since he has started first grade. College/University: IUS for undergrad and currently taking graduate classes, as well
Fun fact: Miss Zink didn't decide she wanted to be a teacher until she was close to graduating high school

"The best part of my job is getting to build relationships with my students. My goal every year is to be a person that students can respect, learn from, and feel safe around. I am proud every time I get through to a student who may have some emotional walls up. I know these are the students who need me the most, so I have to work incredibly hard to be a good influence in their lives and build a meaningful relationship with them."

Miss Zink was nominated by parent Laura Dabney, who wrote, "Over the years, I’ve consistently seen Ms. Zink’s classes demonstrate so much heart. They cheer and support each other, check in on each other, take care of each other, are happy, kind, aware and inclusive. This isn’t a group within her classes, it’s her entire class. Over multiple years. So much love, heart, guidance, support and encouragement from Ms. Zink has created an amazing safe place of learning over the years.
